Polar Technology are debuting the first iteration of their innovative range of hydrogen storage solutions, branded with the company’s new trademark, H2 Eta™.
H2 Eta™ represents a product line of hydrogen solutions that offer leading gravimetric and volumetric efficiency, and that function as the enabling technology in a variety of end applications.
As hydrogen becomes more prominent as an alternative fuel in the ongoing battle to reduce emissions, the need to provide weight-saving and reliable solutions is paramount. This is because the challenges that face the widespread adoption of hydrogen power include its volatility, and the large quantities required to store the same amount of energy as traditional fuel sources. It is these challenges that Polar Technology are addressing with the H2 Eta™ range.
The first product line within the range are lightweight cylinders that are enabling the next generation of UAV technology. Polar Technology have agreed a partnership with leading hydrogen fuel cell provider, Intelligent Energy, to provide an initial batch of 17L vessels, with the first sets supplied in Q4 this year.
These cylinders offer a best-in-class weight efficiency of between 7-8% which enables superior flight time over an equivalent mass of batteries for single and multi-rotor drones. The performance over competitors is supported by Polar’s strength in design with specialist materials and cutting-edge filament winding facilities. The 3 spindle, 3-tow winding capability enables winding of three vessels in as little as one hour, a unique capability within UK manufacturing.
The first prototypes recently passed an 11,000-cycle fatigue test first time, with Polar targeting further weight savings as a result. This level of testing is representative of the UN ECE R134 certification, which the vessels will be certified against in the future, so this is a key early milestone in the development of a market-ready hydrogen solution that can be scaled to volume production.
The cylinders are just one of a growing portfolio of hydrogen solutions that Polar Technology are exploring, with technologies also being developed for larger, uniquely packaged storage systems and the cryogenic storage of liquified hydrogen. More details of the full hydrogen portfolio can be found here.
As hydrogen power continues to become a more viable and commercialised solution, Polar Technology’s H2 Eta™ range is well-placed to be at the forefront of this clean energy revolution.
